Making the decision to see a counsellor can feel really daunting and it's so important to find someone that feels right for you and you feel safe with. There are so many types of therapy but research has proven that the most fundamental component is the relationship you have with your therapist.
I first began my journey into personal therapy over 20 years ago. At the time I was really struggling with some intense challenges and generally feeling overwhelmed by life. I tried a couple of therapists and on the third attempt found someone that felt like a good fit.
As I really began to engage in my therapy I was able to make changes in my life that felt transformative and I really believe that process saved my life. It was this experience that led me to train and become a therapist myself and I am passionate about providing a space for you to show up just as you are and to support you to work out what you need in order to move through whatever challenging situation you might be dealing with.
It may be that you are certain that you are ready to start therapy or you may feel unsure and just want to get in touch to find out some more about the process. I welcome enquiries from everyone.
I believe a lot of us seek counselling when we lack peace. I really believe therapy can help us find that peace. We all have our own wisdom about what we need, what choice to make and what action to take, but sometimes we can get in our own way!
Uncovering our own answers can be challenging and we need someone who we can depend on, who won't shy away when things get tough and who can bring curiosity and compassion to our ways of being.
Getting to know and understand yourself is rarely straightforward and I recognise the importance of adapting to each individual and their own unique needs. I offer a variety of ways of working from traditional talking therapy to creative understanding though sandtray, drawing or music, but my thinking is informed by Internal Family Systems (IFS, see below) and I feel passionately about the power this way of working offers to healing.
Counselling can offer the opportunity to work through any challenging time or situation. People come to counselling for all different reasons. It may be that they are unhappy or feel stuck and want to make a change and don't know where to begin, a sudden event or traumatic experience might be making life really hard to manage, or there may be a specific issue to work through.
Whatever the reason, counselling can offer the time to look at what is happening in a safe and supportive environment with someone completely removed from the situation.
In our initial session we would talk about what had bought you to counselling, if you think counselling might help you and if so, whether we would work well together and how that might look going forward. It is often helpful to reflect after this time about whether you feel working together would be right for you.
